It all started in Marie-Line Allen's French 3 Class at St Augustine High School where the students wrote a book on the journey of two refugees, Sedrick and Armand, who traveled from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Uganda and eventually, to San Diego. As a refugee in Uganda, Sedrick sought to create peace among the refugees by organizing friendly soccer games. The idea was to show them that they can get along and work as a team regardless of their ethnic background. This led to Sedrick creating YARID, a non-profit organization to teach English to francophone refugees, which then led to teaching refugees a trade and other valuable working skills.
Once in San Diego, Sedrick continued to assist the refugees in Uganda, but also saw the need to help with the integration of refugees in the San Diego community. In order to support Sedrick in his efforts, the IRC Club decided to bring together Saints' soccer players and refugees to help them establish new friendships. The IRC club is also working on raising funds to help Sedrick and IRC secure uniforms, equipment, facilities and supervision.
